I've moved this from the 'Spanking-related Discussion' section:
Back in the late 1970s, when I'd have been about 10-years-old, my parents employed a trio of workmen to build an extension on the house. I've no idea what their names were, so we'll call them Tom, Dick and Harry! Much of this work was done during the school summer holidays. It was quite disruptive from what I can remember, but never mind.
I can clearly recall my Mum taking a tray of cold drinks out to the builders (presumably for one of their many breaks!) and one of them, almost certainly Harry, said, "Don't spill any or I'll put you across my knee!" I thought my mother (Margaret) was unamused, although the other two workmen ('Tom' and 'Dick') found it very funny!
The following day (or the day after that, I can't quite remember and it doesn't really matter), there was an almost identical moment when my Mum, again carrying a tray of drinks out to the builders, was told by Harry, "Hurry up with those drinks, Margaret, or I'll smack your bare bottom!"
As far as I know, my Mum never told my father any of this but she did confide in our next-door neighbour. But when she told this woman that Harry had threatened to spank her bare bottom, the neighbour (who apparently knew him) laughed and remarked, "Oh, he's always saying things like that!" My Mum seemed unconvinced. "I'm not joking! He really meant it. That he'd spank my bare bottom!" If my Mum was expecting any sympathy from this other woman then she didn't get it. The neighbour laughed again and said, "Well, you'll have to be careful then, won't you?" So much for the sisterhood!
My Mum later told this woman that she was dreading the end of the summer holidays and the kids going back to school (the opposite of how she and most Mums usually felt by then!) because she would be alone with the builders and feared they (or, at least, Harry) would spank her bare bottom.
Yet, despite all this, my Mum seemed to have a reasonably good relationship with the builders – even though she constantly moaned about them and the disruption they were causing. I can remember her sometimes sitting at the patio table with them, laughing and joking. On one of those occasions, as she walked back indoors carrying the drinks tray, Harry – I think – may have slapped her on the backside. His hand came down just as they disappeared through the back door. Unfortunately, I didn't see it but I definitely heard what sounded like a slap!
